Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Media serves as a powerful tool in combating illiteracy by promoting education, raising awareness, and fostering a culture of learning. In Gombe South LGA, Gombe State, radio programs, newspapers, and television broadcasts have been used to provide educational content, especially in rural communities. Media campaigns addressing adult education, literacy classes, and the importance of child education have demonstrated positive impacts on community awareness (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2023). However, challenges such as limited access to media resources and the prevalence of traditional beliefs often hinder the effectiveness of these initiatives. This study examines the role of media in reducing illiteracy in Gombe South, identifying gaps and strategies for improvement.
