Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Environmental journalism serves as a critical platform for raising awareness and advocating for the protection of natural resources. In Wukari LGA, Taraba State, deforestation has become a pressing environmental issue due to factors such as logging, agricultural expansion, and population growth. These activities have led to significant ecological degradation, including loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and climate change impacts (Abdullahi & Tanimu, 2023). Environmental journalists play a pivotal role in highlighting these challenges, informing policymakers and the public, and fostering collective action to mitigate deforestation. By investigating and reporting on the causes and consequences of deforestation, journalists stimulate dialogue and drive initiatives aimed at conservation and sustainable development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of forests in maintaining ecological balance, deforestation in Wukari LGA persists at an alarming rate. Poor enforcement of environmental regulations, lack of public awareness, and limited media coverage exacerbate the issue. Although environmental journalism has the potential to influence policy and public behavior, its impact in Wukari LGA remains underexplored. This study investigates the role of environmental journalism in addressing deforestation and identifies ways to strengthen its influence in the region.
