Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Health journalism serves as a critical tool in disseminating information about diseases, preventive measures, and public health policies. In malaria-endemic regions like Wamakko LGA, Sokoto State, health journalism plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of malaria. By providing accurate and timely information through radio, television, newspapers, and online platforms, health journalists bridge the gap between healthcare providers and communities. They address misinformation, promote behavioral change, and mobilize community efforts toward malaria prevention (Aliyu & Yusuf, 2024). Despite advancements in malaria control programs, the disease remains a significant health challenge in Wamakko, making the role of health journalism indispensable in combating its prevalence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although significant strides have been made in malaria prevention and treatment, Wamakko LGA continues to face high incidences of the disease. Limited access to health information, cultural beliefs, and low literacy levels exacerbate the challenge. While health journalism has the potential to address these issues, its contribution to malaria control in Wamakko LGA remains underexplored. This study examines how health journalism contributes to combating malaria and identifies gaps in current reporting practices.
