Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Food security remains a critical issue globally, particularly in regions like Makurdi LGA, Benue State, where agricultural activities are central to livelihoods. Despite being a food-producing region, challenges such as poor infrastructure, climate change, and limited access to resources undermine food security. Public Relations (PR) plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about food security issues, encouraging community participation, and advocating for policies that support local food systems.
PR strategies, including media campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and educational outreach, can amplify awareness of food security challenges and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Research indicates that effective PR interventions contribute to behavioral change and foster community-driven solutions to food insecurity (Okafor & Danjuma, 2023). This study examines how PR can enhance food security awareness in Makurdi LGA and drive collective action for sustainable solutions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite its agricultural potential, food security challenges persist in Makurdi LGA due to insufficient awareness, lack of stakeholder coordination, and ineffective communication strategies. While PR has the capacity to address these issues, its application in promoting food security awareness is inadequately documented. This study investigates the role of PR in enhancing local food security awareness and fostering community involvement.
