Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Post-election conflicts are a common challenge in democratic systems, often arising from disputes over election outcomes, allegations of fraud, and perceived marginalization. In Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State, post-election conflicts have occasionally disrupted peace, strained inter-community relations, and hindered socio-economic development. Public Relations (PR) is integral to managing these conflicts by fostering dialogue, promoting transparency, and rebuilding trust.
Effective PR practices, including stakeholder engagement, conflict resolution communication, and peacebuilding campaigns, help de-escalate tensions and foster reconciliation. Studies show that PR plays a crucial role in mediating conflicts by promoting understanding and ensuring accountability (Okoye & Abdullahi, 2023). This study explores the application of PR practices in managing post-election conflicts in Keffi LGA and evaluates their effectiveness in fostering peace and stability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The recurrence of post-election conflicts in Keffi LGA highlights a gap in effective conflict management strategies. Insufficient communication, lack of inclusivity, and inadequate engagement of stakeholders exacerbate tensions. Although PR holds potential as a conflict management tool, its role in managing post-election conflicts in the area remains underexplored. This study examines how PR can be effectively utilized to manage and resolve post-election disputes.
