Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change is a critical global issue with far-reaching implications for environmental sustainability, human livelihoods, and economic development. In Nigeria, particularly in Yola South LGA, Adamawa State, the effects of climate change manifest as erratic weather patterns, flooding, desertification, and reduced agricultural productivity. Despite these challenges, public awareness of climate change and adaptive practices remains limited.
Public Relations (PR) serves as a vital tool for raising awareness about climate change and promoting sustainable practices. PR strategies, including community engagement, media campaigns, and stakeholder partnerships, can educate the public on the causes, impacts, and mitigation strategies of climate change. Recent research underscores the importance of localized PR campaigns in addressing environmental challenges by fostering awareness, encouraging behavior change, and facilitating policy advocacy (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). However, the extent to which PR has been effectively utilized to address climate change awareness in Yola South LGA requires further exploration.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Climate change poses significant risks to the socio-economic well-being of communities in Yola South LGA. Despite its severity, awareness of the phenomenon and adaptive strategies remains low due to inadequate communication efforts. PR offers an avenue to bridge this gap, but its strategies and effectiveness in this context are underexplored. This study investigates the role of PR in raising climate change awareness and fostering community engagement in Yola South LGA.

1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the role of PR in addressing one of the most pressing global challenges—climate change. It provides valuable insights for policymakers, environmental organizations, and PR practitioners on leveraging communication strategies to foster awareness and action. By focusing on Yola South LGA, the study contributes to localized solutions for climate change, offering lessons that can be applied in similar contexts across Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on PR strategies for addressing climate change awareness in Yola South LGA, Adamawa State. It does not delve into broader environmental issues or areas outside the local government area.
