Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Conflict and violence have significantly impacted Shendam LGA, Plateau State, leading to loss of lives, displacement, and strained inter-ethnic relationships. Peacebuilding efforts are critical to restoring harmony and fostering sustainable development in this conflict-prone area. Public Relations (PR) serves as a strategic tool in peacebuilding by promoting dialogue, encouraging reconciliation, and fostering mutual understanding among conflicting groups.
PR practitioners facilitate peacebuilding by employing conflict-sensitive communication strategies, engaging community leaders, and promoting messages of unity and coexistence. These efforts are often complemented by media campaigns that highlight the benefits of peace and the consequences of conflict. Recent research underscores the importance of PR in conflict resolution, particularly in diverse and volatile settings (Ahmed & Bawa, 2023; Yusuf, 2024). This study examines the role of PR in facilitating peacebuilding in Shendam LGA, focusing on its strategies, challenges, and impact on community cohesion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing peacebuilding efforts in Shendam LGA, conflicts persist due to mistrust, misinformation, and lack of inclusive dialogue. Many initiatives fail to achieve their objectives due to ineffective communication and limited stakeholder engagement. PR offers a viable solution by promoting trust, facilitating dialogue, and encouraging collaboration. However, the role of PR in peacebuilding efforts in Shendam LGA remains underexplored. This study investigates how PR can enhance peacebuilding efforts, addressing barriers and proposing actionable solutions.
