Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has revolutionized communication globally, offering a platform for real-time interaction, information dissemination, and public engagement. In Nigeria, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become key tools for discussing governance, particularly at local levels. In Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT, social media shapes public discourse on governance by influencing opinions, fostering accountability, and providing a channel for feedback between citizens and authorities.
Through social media, citizens are empowered to express concerns about governance, including service delivery, transparency, and development. Public officials also leverage these platforms to communicate policies and achievements. However, the impact of social media on public perception of governance can be both positive and negative. While it fosters transparency and participation, misinformation and polarizing narratives can undermine trust in governance. This study explores the role of social media in shaping public perception of governance in Gwagwalada, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and implications.

The role of social media in governance discourse has raised critical concerns in Gwagwalada Area Council. While it serves as a platform for civic engagement and transparency, it is also a source of misinformation and divisive narratives that distort public perception of governance. This duality poses challenges for both citizens and policymakers, as trust and credibility are at stake. The limited research on the specific impacts of social media on governance perception in Gwagwalada creates a knowledge gap that this study aims to address.
