Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Banditry has emerged as a major security threat in Nigeria, particularly in Zamfara State. Shinkafi LGA, one of the most affected areas, experiences frequent attacks that disrupt socio-economic activities and displace communities. Investigative journalism is a powerful tool in addressing such challenges by exposing the root causes, highlighting government failures, and providing actionable solutions.
Investigative journalism involves in-depth research and reporting to uncover hidden truths and hold perpetrators accountable. In Shinkafi LGA, journalists play a critical role in shedding light on the dynamics of banditry, including its socio-economic and political underpinnings. However, the profession faces challenges such as safety risks, limited resources, and lack of institutional support. This study examines the contributions and challenges of investigative journalism in curbing banditry in Shinkafi LGA.
