Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Malnutrition remains a critical public health issue in Nigeria, with children and women being the most affected groups. In Minna LGA, Niger State, malnutrition is driven by factors such as poverty, inadequate healthcare, and poor dietary practices. Development journalism, which emphasizes community engagement and advocacy for socio-economic progress, has the potential to address these challenges by raising awareness and influencing policy decisions.
Development journalism goes beyond traditional reporting by highlighting solutions, amplifying marginalized voices, and fostering collaboration between stakeholders. In the context of malnutrition, it can promote public health campaigns, educate communities on nutrition, and advocate for improved policies and funding. This study explores how development journalism contributes to combating malnutrition in Minna LGA and identifies areas for improvement in media practices.

Despite various interventions, malnutrition remains a persistent problem in Minna LGA. Limited awareness and inadequate advocacy hinder efforts to address the issue effectively. While development journalism has the potential to combat malnutrition, its role in Minna LGA is underutilized due to factors such as limited resources, lack of training, and poor collaboration with stakeholders. This study examines the contributions and challenges of development journalism in tackling malnutrition in the area.
