Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Corruption remains one of the most significant impediments to development and governance in Nigeria. It undermines public trust, weakens institutions, and perpetuates poverty. Jalingo South LGA in Taraba State is not immune to these challenges, with corruption affecting various sectors, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Investigative journalism serves as a powerful tool for exposing corruption, holding public officials accountable, and promoting transparency.

Investigative journalism involves in-depth research and reporting to uncover hidden truths, particularly on issues of public interest like corruption. By providing evidence-based reports, journalists empower citizens, influence policy changes, and deter corrupt practices.
