Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Drug abuse among youth has become a critical public health and social issue in many communities across Nigeria, including Lafia West LGA in Nasarawa State. The misuse of substances such as marijuana, tramadol, codeine, and other illicit drugs has led to numerous societal problems, including increased crime rates, deteriorating mental health, and disrupted educational and career prospects. The media, particularly journalism, plays a pivotal role in creating awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, highlighting preventive measures, and advocating for rehabilitation and policy changes.

Journalism serves as a watchdog and educator, informing the public about the root causes of drug abuse, its impact, and available interventions. By leveraging investigative reporting, feature stories, and awareness campaigns, journalists can spotlight the realities of drug addiction and provide a platform for dialogue and solutions. Despite the critical role of journalism, its effectiveness in combating drug abuse in Lafia West LGA has not been fully explored. This study seeks to investigate how journalism contributes to the fight against drug abuse among youth in the area.
