Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The proliferation of fake news has become a significant global concern, undermining trust in media, influencing public opinion, and destabilizing communities. In Nigeria, the rise of digital platforms has further complicated the media landscape, as misinformation spreads rapidly through social media and online forums. In Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, the impact of fake news has been particularly evident in issues such as public health, elections, and inter-communal relations, where misinformation exacerbates tensions and confusion.
Online news portals, with their capacity for real-time reporting and wide reach, have emerged as key players in combating fake news. By providing fact-checked, credible information, they serve as a counterbalance to the spread of falsehoods. However, the effectiveness of these portals in Kaltungo remains underexplored. Questions about their accessibility, credibility, and strategies for combating misinformation need critical examination. This study investigates the role of online news portals in mitigating the spread of fake news in Kaltungo LGA, shedding light on their impact and limitations.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Fake news poses a serious threat to social cohesion and informed decision-making in Kaltungo LGA. While online news portals are expected to counteract misinformation, challenges such as limited digital literacy, biased reporting, and lack of fact-checking mechanisms undermine their effectiveness. Moreover, the absence of localized research on the role of online news portals in combating fake news in rural areas like Kaltungo creates a gap in understanding how these platforms can be optimized for greater impact. This study addresses this gap by examining the strategies employed by online news portals and their effectiveness in curbing misinformation in Kaltungo LGA.
