Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Infrastructure development is a cornerstone of socio-economic growth and regional development. Local media, as the closest link to communities, plays a critical role in covering infrastructure projects, informing citizens, and fostering accountability in governance. In Bida LGA, Niger State, infrastructure challenges such as inadequate road networks, unreliable electricity, and poor water supply have significantly impacted livelihoods. The local media’s coverage of these issues directly influences public awareness, perceptions of government performance, and community engagement in developmental projects.

Local media outlets are uniquely positioned to provide in-depth, localized reporting on infrastructure development. However, factors such as editorial biases, resource constraints, and political influences can shape how these stories are reported and perceived. Understanding audience perception of local media coverage is vital for ensuring that media fulfills its role as an agent of development and accountability. This study examines the audience’s views on how local media in Bida LGA covers infrastructure development and explores the implications for media practice and public discourse.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Bida LGA, inadequate or skewed media coverage of infrastructure development has led to public mistrust and limited engagement with development initiatives. Audiences often question the credibility, depth, and impartiality of local media reporting on these projects. Furthermore, political and economic pressures can compromise the independence of local media, leading to sensationalism or underreporting of critical infrastructure issues. Despite the pivotal role of media in shaping public opinion and holding authorities accountable, there is limited research on how audiences in Bida perceive the local media’s performance in this area. This study addresses this gap, providing insights into audience perceptions and suggesting ways to improve media practice.
