Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Ethical journalism is the cornerstone of credible media practice and plays a vital role in shaping informed societies. In Nigeria, where media serves as a critical tool for accountability, ethical journalism is essential in fostering public trust and ensuring that journalists adhere to principles of accuracy, fairness, and impartiality. Kano Municipal LGA, as a bustling metropolitan area in Kano State, is home to diverse media consumers with varying perceptions of journalistic practices. The area's vibrant media landscape provides a unique opportunity to explore public attitudes toward journalistic ethics and the factors influencing those perceptions.

Despite the critical role of journalism in democracy, concerns about media bias, sensationalism, and misinformation persist. Ethical lapses can erode public trust, while adherence to professional standards can enhance the media’s role as a watchdog. Existing research often examines journalism ethics broadly but lacks a localized focus on specific populations like those in Kano Municipal LGA. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating public perception of ethical journalism practices in the area, with the aim of enhancing media credibility and accountability.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The credibility of journalism in Kano Municipal LGA is often questioned due to perceived biases, sensational reporting, and the influence of political or financial interests. These issues undermine the public's trust in the media, affecting its ability to inform, educate, and hold power to account. Although ethical guidelines exist to regulate journalistic practices, their implementation and public perception remain inconsistent, particularly in regions with diverse socio-political dynamics like Kano Municipal LGA. The lack of localized studies addressing how the public perceives ethical journalism practices further exacerbates this gap. This study addresses the need for empirical insights into public attitudes toward ethical journalism in the region.
