Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Social media platforms have revolutionized the way information is gathered and disseminated, offering a dynamic tool for engaging with audiences in real time. Among these tools, social media polls stand out as a highly interactive method for gauging public opinion, preferences, and interests. In event planning, particularly within Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, social media polls are increasingly employed to gather feedback from potential attendees, shape event content, and enhance audience satisfaction.
The effectiveness of social media polls lies in their accessibility and immediacy. Platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook offer polling features that enable event organizers to interact with large, diverse audiences at minimal cost. According to Okoye and Musa (2024), social media polls enhance event planning by allowing organizers to make data-driven decisions that align with audience preferences, thereby increasing the likelihood of event success. These tools also foster inclusivity, providing a platform for individuals from different demographics to voice their opinions.
In Lokoja, the adoption of social media for event promotion and feedback collection has grown substantially, reflecting broader digital trends. However, the strategic use of social media polls to shape event content remains underexplored. This study investigates how social media polls influence event content design, focusing on their effectiveness, limitations, and potential for fostering audience engagement in Lokoja Local Government Area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Event organizers in Lokoja often struggle to design content that resonates with their diverse audiences. Traditional feedback mechanisms, such as in-person surveys and suggestion boxes, are limited in reach and often fail to capture the preferences of younger, tech-savvy demographics. Despite the availability of social media platforms, many organizers either underutilize or mismanage these tools, leading to missed opportunities for audience engagement.
Furthermore, there is a lack of empirical data on the impact of social media polls in shaping event content in Lokoja. Challenges such as low response rates, bias in poll design, and limited access to digital platforms among certain demographics also pose significant barriers. This study aims to address these gaps by exploring how social media polls can be effectively utilized to enhance event content and improve overall audience satisfaction.
