Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Cultural exhibitions play a vital role in preserving and promoting the heritage of communities, serving as platforms for the celebration of traditions, history, and values. They act as mirrors reflecting the unique identity of a people while fostering a sense of pride and belonging. In Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State, cultural exhibitions are particularly significant, given the region's rich heritage epitomized by the internationally recognized Argungu Fishing Festival. Such events not only showcase the area's cultural wealth but also contribute to its socio-economic development by attracting tourism and investment.
Research has shown that cultural exhibitions strengthen local identity by providing a medium for communities to pass down traditions and stories to younger generations (Ademola & Ibrahim, 2024). They also create opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and understanding, thus reinforcing unity in diversity. However, the erosion of local identity due to globalization and urbanization presents a pressing challenge, making the role of cultural exhibitions even more crucial in safeguarding heritage.
The use of mass communication in promoting cultural exhibitions has further amplified their reach and impact. Through platforms such as television, radio, and social media, these events gain visibility, encouraging broader participation and fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural heritage. This study explores the role of cultural exhibitions in strengthening local identity in Argungu LGA, highlighting their significance in preserving traditions, promoting community cohesion, and fostering socio-economic growth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of cultural exhibitions to reinforce local identity, their impact in Argungu LGA faces several challenges. Factors such as inadequate funding, limited media coverage, and a lack of engagement with younger generations threaten the sustainability of these events. Furthermore, the influence of globalization and the proliferation of foreign cultural content have contributed to a gradual erosion of indigenous practices and values.
While the Argungu Fishing Festival has gained international recognition, other cultural exhibitions in the area often lack the visibility and support needed to thrive. The absence of systematic efforts to integrate these exhibitions into broader development initiatives further exacerbates the problem. There is a need to examine how cultural exhibitions can be leveraged more effectively to strengthen local identity in Argungu LGA, ensuring their continued relevance in an increasingly globalized world.
