Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Event planning is a complex process that requires a deep understanding of audience preferences, logistical needs, and anticipated challenges to ensure success. Pre-event surveys, as a key tool for gathering insights, play an essential role in aligning event objectives with attendee expectations. These surveys provide actionable data on various aspects, such as preferred event themes, suitable venues, and audience engagement strategies. In the context of Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, where events range from cultural festivals to corporate gatherings, the use of pre-event surveys remains underexplored despite their potential to significantly enhance event outcomes.
According to recent research, organizations that utilize pre-event surveys are more likely to achieve higher satisfaction rates among attendees and stakeholders (Garcia et al., 2024). Such surveys enable organizers to identify potential pain points, tailor content to the target audience, and implement corrective measures before the event day. Furthermore, pre-event surveys contribute to financial efficiency by reducing resource wastage and ensuring a more targeted approach to planning. However, in many localities, including Lafia, the absence of systematic survey practices has led to recurring issues such as low attendance, poor audience engagement, and logistical mishaps.
The role of mass communication in promoting the adoption and effectiveness of pre-event surveys is equally critical. By leveraging media platforms, event organizers can encourage stakeholder participation, increasing the reliability and utility of the data collected. This study seeks to assess the impact of pre-event surveys on the success of events in Lafia LGA, exploring the intersection of data-driven planning and event management in a local context.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of data-driven planning in event management, pre-event surveys remain underutilized in Lafia LGA. Event organizers often rely on anecdotal evidence or generic assumptions, resulting in suboptimal outcomes such as misaligned content, logistical oversights, and low audience satisfaction. While studies in urban centers have highlighted the effectiveness of pre-event surveys in improving event success, there is limited research focused on their application and impact in smaller communities like Lafia.
Furthermore, the lack of awareness and expertise among local event organizers contributes to a gap in adopting survey methodologies as a standard practice. This problem is compounded by inadequate communication strategies to engage participants in providing meaningful feedback before events. Without addressing these challenges, event planners in Lafia risk perpetuating inefficiencies and failing to capitalize on the potential benefits of pre-event surveys.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the body of knowledge on event management by highlighting the practical benefits of pre-event surveys in a local context. It provides actionable recommendations for event organizers in Lafia LGA, emphasizing the importance of data-driven planning in achieving success. Additionally, the study underscores the role of mass communication in fostering awareness and participation in survey practices, offering insights for media professionals and policymakers. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, this research aims to enhance the overall quality and efficiency of events in the study area.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to examining the use and impact of pre-event surveys in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. It focuses exclusively on events held within this locality and does not extend to post-event evaluation or other planning tools.
