Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Community involvement is a crucial determinant in the success of events, particularly in contexts where cultural, social, and economic values intersect. In Makurdi Local Government Area, events such as cultural festivals, community development initiatives, and religious gatherings reflect the rich heritage and identity of the people. These events are often organized with input from community members, which ensures local ownership and participation. The concept of community involvement spans volunteerism, decision-making participation, and grassroots mobilization, which collectively shape the outcomes of such events. Scholars argue that inclusive approaches to event management foster unity, enhance local capacity, and contribute to the sustainability of social projects (Adebayo, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024). However, challenges such as limited resources, lack of coordination, and insufficient representation often impede full community involvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of community involvement, event success in Makurdi LGA is often undermined by inadequate stakeholder engagement. Many events fail to achieve their intended objectives due to the exclusion of critical local actors, misaligned priorities, and inadequate communication channels. Moreover, poor resource allocation and political interference further exacerbate the challenges, limiting the potential of events to drive social cohesion and economic growth. This study seeks to explore how increased community involvement can address these challenges and contribute to organizing successful events in Makurdi LGA.
