Background of the Study
Agriculture is a vital component of Nigeria’s economy, serving as a source of livelihood for the majority of its rural population. In Bassa Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State, agriculture plays a significant role in economic development and poverty alleviation. However, achieving sustained agricultural growth depends largely on financial accountability in the management and utilization of resources allocated to the sector. Financial accountability ensures transparency and efficiency in agricultural programs, thereby increasing farmers' access to necessary inputs and infrastructure. This study investigates the impact of financial accountability on agricultural development in Bassa LGA, emphasizing its role in addressing challenges such as mismanagement, corruption, and resource underutilization.
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant budgetary allocations to agriculture, Bassa LGA continues to face stagnation in agricultural productivity. Weak financial accountability mechanisms often lead to misappropriation of funds, delayed project implementation, and inadequate provision of resources to farmers. This study explores the link between financial accountability and agricultural development in Bassa LGA, aiming to identify solutions to these challenges.
