Background of the Study

The construction industry in Hong Local Government Area (LGA) plays a vital role in infrastructure development, including residential, commercial, and public buildings. One of the critical challenges in the industry is accurately estimating project costs. Construction cost estimation involves predicting the total costs required to complete a project, considering factors such as labor, materials, overhead, and unforeseen expenses (Kaka et al., 2014).

In Hong LGA, where construction activities are growing rapidly, the accuracy of cost estimations is crucial for successful project delivery. Inaccurate cost estimates often lead to cost overruns, project delays, and financial strain for contractors and developers. This study aims to investigate the cost estimation practices employed in construction projects in Hong LGA and assess their effectiveness in minimizing cost overruns and improving project outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Construction projects in Hong LGA are frequently impacted by cost overruns and delays due to inaccurate cost estimation. The lack of proper cost estimation practices hinders the ability of contractors to allocate resources efficiently and manage project budgets. This study will explore the current cost estimation practices and their effectiveness in construction projects.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to examine the cost estimation practices used in construction projects in Hong LGA and assess their effectiveness.

The objectives are:

  1. To investigate the cost estimation practices used in construction projects in Hong LGA.
  2. To evaluate the accuracy of cost estimation and its impact on project outcomes.
  3. To identify the challenges faced in implementing effective cost estimation techniques in the construction industry in Hong LGA.

Research Questions

  1. What cost estimation practices are used in construction projects in Hong LGA?
  2. How accurate are the cost estimates in construction projects in Hong LGA?
  3. What challenges are faced in implementing effective cost estimation practices in Hong LGA's construction industry?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Construction projects in Hong LGA that use detailed and systematic cost estimation practices experience fewer cost overruns and delays.
  2. Accurate cost estimation improves the financial performance and timely delivery of construction projects in Hong LGA.
  3. Construction companies in Hong LGA face challenges in cost estimation due to a lack of skilled personnel and advanced tools.

Significance of the Study

This study will help construction firms in Hong LGA enhance their cost estimation practices, leading to more accurate cost predictions, improved project delivery, and better financial outcomes.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study focuses on construction projects in Hong LGA and their cost estimation practices. Limitations include access to data on project costs and financial records from contractors.

Definition of Terms

  • Cost Estimation: The process of predicting the cost of completing a construction project, considering various factors like labor, materials, and overhead.
  • Construction Project: A project involving the creation of physical infrastructure, including buildings, roads, and other construction works.
  • Hong Local Government Area: A local government area in Adamawa State, Nigeria, known for its construction industry and infrastructure development.
