1.1 Background of the Study

Literacy remains a critical challenge in Jigawa State, particularly among adults who missed formal education opportunities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have emerged as transformative tools for enhancing literacy programs. AI-powered platforms, such as personalized learning systems and natural language processing tools, enable adaptive learning experiences tailored to individual needs.

In adult education centers, AI tools provide interactive content, assess learner progress in real-time, and offer targeted interventions to address specific literacy challenges. These innovations have the potential to accelerate learning outcomes, reduce dropout rates, and empower learners (Ibrahim & Musa, 2025). This study assesses the role of AI applications in improving literacy programs in Jigawa State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve adult literacy in Jigawa State, many programs face challenges such as resource constraints, lack of trained educators, and high dropout rates. AI tools offer a solution, yet their adoption remains limited due to technical and financial barriers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the adoption of AI applications in adult education centers in Jigawa State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of AI tools on literacy improvement programs.
  3. To identify challenges to the implementation of AI in literacy programs.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How are AI applications being adopted in adult education centers in Jigawa State?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. AI applications significantly improve learning outcomes in adult literacy programs.
  2. AI-powered tools reduce dropout rates in literacy programs.
  3. Limited funding and technical expertise are major barriers to AI adoption in literacy programs.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study highlight the transformative potential of AI in addressing literacy challenges, offering practical recommendations for education policymakers and practitioners.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on adult education centers in Jigawa State and the use of AI applications in literacy programs. Limitations include variability in program capacities and potential resistance from educators and learners.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Adult Literacy: The ability of adults to read, write, and comprehend basic information.
  2. Personalized Learning: AI-driven educational methods tailored to individual learner needs.
