1.1 Background of the Study

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized several creative industries, with music composition being one of the most notable examples. AI can now assist in generating melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and lyrics, making it an invaluable tool for musicians and composers. In Northern Nigeria, a rich cultural heritage is embedded in its music, including traditional Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri music, among others. The integration of AI into music composition has the potential to preserve and innovate these traditions by blending them with modern techniques.

Music studios in Kaduna State, a major cultural hub in Northern Nigeria, have started experimenting with AI-driven music composition to create music that resonates with both contemporary audiences and traditional listeners. AI tools can analyze vast amounts of musical data, generating compositions that mirror the intricate structures and patterns found in traditional Northern Nigerian music (Aliyu & Umar, 2025). This study examines how AI is used in music studios in Kaduna to create culturally relevant compositions, preserve traditional sounds, and appeal to new audiences.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Traditional music in Northern Nigeria is under pressure from globalization and modernization, with younger generations showing less interest in preserving indigenous sounds. Music studios in Kaduna face challenges in maintaining cultural relevance while appealing to modern audiences. AI-driven music composition offers a way to innovate while respecting traditional forms, but its integration into music production is still in its infancy. There is a need for a deeper understanding of how AI can contribute to preserving Northern Nigerian music culture and fostering its evolution.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the use of AI in music composition within Kaduna State’s music studios.

  2. To evaluate the impact of AI-driven music on preserving and innovating Northern Nigerian music traditions.

  3. To assess the challenges and opportunities associated with the integration of AI in music composition in Kaduna State.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is AI being utilized in music composition in Kaduna State's music studios?

  2. In what ways has AI-driven music composition impacted the preservation and innovation of Northern Nigerian musical traditions?

  3. What are the challenges and opportunities of adopting AI in music composition for Northern Nigerian culture?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. AI-driven music composition enhances the preservation and innovation of Northern Nigerian music traditions.

  2. Music created with AI tools is perceived as culturally relevant by local audiences.

  3. Challenges to AI adoption in music composition are related to cultural resistance, cost, and technical limitations.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This research highlights the potential for AI to act as a bridge between the preservation of traditional music and the need for innovation in the music industry. It provides insights into how technology can be harmonized with cultural values to create music that resonates with both older and younger generations in Northern Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on music studios in Kaduna State and their use of AI-driven music composition tools. The limitations include the accessibility of data related to proprietary AI software, and variations in adoption across music studios.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Technology that uses algorithms and data processing to assist in creative tasks like music composition.

  2. Music Composition: The process of creating music, including melody, rhythm, and harmony.

  3. Cultural Preservation: The act of maintaining and transmitting cultural traditions, including music, to future generations.

  4. Innovation in Music: The introduction of new styles, sounds, and methods in music composition.
