1.1 Background of the Study

Contract review is a vital process within the judiciary, as it ensures that legal agreements are enforceable, equitable, and free from ambiguities. Traditional methods of contract review can be time-consuming and prone to human error, particularly when dealing with large volumes of contracts. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into contract review has led to significant improvements in speed, accuracy, and efficiency. AI tools can analyze complex documents, flagging potential issues and suggesting edits based on predefined parameters.

In Kaduna State, the Judiciary has begun implementing AI tools to assist in contract review, enhancing the efficiency of legal professionals and reducing manual workload (Musa & Abubakar, 2025). This study explores how AI-based contract review systems are being used within the Kaduna State Judiciary and the impact of these systems on legal workflows.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The contract review process in Kaduna State’s Judiciary is often labor-intensive and slow, which can lead to delays in legal proceedings. The lack of AI integration in contract management tools has resulted in inefficient handling of legal documents, especially when faced with complex agreements. Without AI tools, legal professionals risk missing critical clauses that could affect the validity of contracts.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the adoption and application of AI in contract review within the Kaduna State Judiciary.

  2. To assess the efficiency improvements and accuracy enhancements brought about by AI tools in contract review.

  3. To identify the challenges faced in the integration and implementation of AI in the contract review process.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How is AI being integrated into the contract review process within the Kaduna State Judiciary?

  2. What impact has AI integration had on the efficiency and accuracy of contract review in Kaduna State?

  3. What are the challenges limiting the successful implementation of AI in contract review?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. AI tools significantly improve the speed and accuracy of contract review in the Kaduna State Judiciary.

  2. AI-driven contract review tools increase the overall efficiency of legal processes.

  3. The challenges in AI adoption are related to technical infrastructure, training, and cost.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides valuable insights into the potential for AI tools to revolutionize contract management within the judiciary, potentially offering efficiencies that could improve the overall legal framework in Kaduna State.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus specifically on the contract review processes within the Kaduna State Judiciary. Limitations include the lack of access to proprietary AI tools used in this context, and variability in the scope of AI integration across the judiciary.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Contract Review: The process of examining legal contracts to ensure compliance, identify risks, and clarify terms.

  2. Artificial Intelligence (AI): The use of machine learning and automation tools to enhance legal document processing.

  3. Automation: The process of using technology to perform tasks that would otherwise require human intervention.

  4. Legal Workflows: The series of steps involved in processing legal documents and managing cases.

  5. Efficiency Improvements: The reduction in time and human resources required to complete tasks due to the integration of AI.
