Background of the Study
The role of media in shaping public discourse, especially during national crises, cannot be understated. Media, encompassing traditional outlets like television, radio, and newspapers, as well as digital platforms like social media, plays a pivotal role in informing the public, shaping perceptions, and influencing policy. The #EndBadGovernment protest in Nigeria, which gained significant traction in 2024, serves as a compelling case study to explore the media's influence during a national crisis.
According to Smith (2024), media functions as a watchdog, holding governments accountable and providing citizens with vital information needed to make informed decisions. During national crises, the media’s role becomes even more critical, serving as the primary means through which information is disseminated to the public. This dissemination can have a profound impact on the direction of the crisis, potentially escalating or de-escalating tensions depending on how information is portrayed (Jones & Murphy, 2024).
The #EndBadGovernment protest, which originated as a grassroots movement against police brutality under the banner #EndSARS, quickly evolved into a broader campaign against systemic corruption and bad governance in Nigeria (Adebayo, 2024). The movement garnered widespread support, particularly among the youth, and was heavily driven by social media platforms. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram became key tools for organizing protests, sharing real-time updates, and garnering international attention (Olalekan, 2024).
A study by Omole (2024) emphasized the dual role of media in national crises: as a platform for mobilizing support and as a tool for government propaganda. In the case of the #EndBadGovernment protest, media coverage was marked by a dichotomy between traditional media outlets and social media platforms. While traditional media in Nigeria was often perceived as being under governmental influence, social media provided an unfiltered platform for protestors to voice their grievances (Okoro & Nwafor, 2024).
The power of social media in shaping public opinion and facilitating mass mobilization has been well-documented in recent academic literature. For instance, research by Adeola (2024) highlights how social media can amplify marginalized voices and bring issues to the forefront of national and international agendas. During the #EndBadGovernment protest, social media not only helped in mobilizing protesters but also played a significant role in countering misinformation and providing alternative narratives to those propagated by traditional media (Eze & Emeh, 2024).
However, the media's role is not without its challenges. Misinformation and fake news have become prevalent, particularly on social media platforms, complicating the public’s ability to discern fact from fiction (Obi, 2024). The spread of misinformation during the #EndBadGovernment protest was notable, with both sides of the conflict accused of disseminating false narratives to sway public opinion (Agbaje, 2024). This has raised critical questions about the ethical responsibilities of media outlets and the need for robust fact-checking mechanisms (Johnson, 2024).
Given this backdrop, this study aims to explore the multifaceted role of media during the #EndBadGovernment protest, examining how different media types influenced public perception and the overall trajectory of the protest. It will also investigate the impact of media coverage on government responses and policy changes, providing insights into the complex interplay between media, public opinion, and governance during national crises.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The #EndBadGovernment protest in Nigeria highlighted the significant impact of media in shaping public perception and influencing government action during national crises. However, the dual nature of media as both a tool for advocacy and misinformation presents a complex dynamic that requires further exploration. The problem this study addresses is the lack of comprehensive understanding of how media influences national crises, particularly in the context of developing nations like Nigeria.
Despite the extensive use of social media during the #EndBadGovernment protest, there is a gap in academic literature regarding the effectiveness of media in facilitating change and the extent to which media coverage influences government policies (Obasi & Uche, 2024). Moreover, the ethical implications of media practices during crises, including the spread of misinformation and the potential for media bias, are areas that remain under-researched (Nwabueze, 2024).
This study seeks to fill these gaps by examining the role of media during the #EndBadGovernment protest, assessing both its positive contributions and its challenges. By analyzing media's impact on public opinion, protest organization, and government response, this research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the media's role in national crises, offering recommendations for enhancing media practices in future crises.

The primary objectives of this study are:
1.4 Research Questions
Based on the objectives, the study will address the following research questions:
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The study will test the following hypotheses:
1.6 Significance of the Study
The significance of this study is both practical and theoretical. Practically, the research provides insights into the role of media in national crises, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. By examining the #EndBadGovernment protest, the study offers valuable lessons for media practitioners, policymakers, and activists on the effective use of media during crises. The findings will inform strategies for leveraging media to promote transparency, accountability, and social justice while mitigating the risks associated with misinformation and media bias.
Theoretically, this study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on media studies, political communication, and crisis management. It expands on the theories of media influence, particularly in the context of digital media and its impact on social movements. By exploring the ethical implications of media practices during national crises, the study also adds to the discourse on media ethics and the responsibilities of media outlets in upholding democratic values and human rights.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of this study is limited to analyzing the role of media during the #EndBadGovernment protest in Nigeria. It focuses on both traditional media and social media platforms, examining their impact on public perception, protest organization, and government response. The study will primarily rely on secondary data, including media reports, social media content, and academic literature, to provide a comprehensive analysis of the media's role during the protest.
However, the study has some limitations. It is restricted to the Nigerian context, and the findings may not be generalizable to other countries with different media landscapes and political environments. Additionally, the study relies on available secondary data, which may be subject to biases and limitations in reporting. Despite these limitations, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the media's role in national crises and contribute to the ongoing discourse on media and governance.
