THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION TOOLS BY YOUTHS IN ORGANIZING PROTESTS (A CASE STUDY OF ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST IN NIGERIA)

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In contemporary protest movements, technology and communication tools have become integral in organizing, mobilizing, and sustaining activism. The EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, which began in 2024, exemplify how digital platforms can amplify voices, coordinate actions, and rally support among youths. These protests were driven by widespread frustration over corruption, economic mismanagement, and poor governance, and technology played a crucial role in their execution (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024).

Social media platforms, messaging apps, and other digital tools have revolutionized the way protests are organized and managed. They enable real-time communication, facilitate information dissemination, and foster community building among activists. During the EndBadGovernance protests, platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp were pivotal in spreading awareness, coordinating protest activities, and mobilizing participants (Premium Times, 2024; Punchng, 2024).

The use of technology not only enhanced the efficiency of organizing efforts but also increased the visibility of the protests on a global scale. Digital tools provided a means for protesters to document and share their experiences, engage with international audiences, and exert pressure on policymakers. However, the reliance on technology also introduced challenges, including issues related to internet censorship, misinformation, and the digital divide (Aljazeera, 2024).

This study aims to explore the role of technology and communication tools in organizing the EndBadGovernance protests. By examining how youths utilized these tools, the study seeks to understand their impact on protest organization, mobilization, and effectiveness.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The use of technology and communication tools in organizing protests raises important questions about their effectiveness, advantages, and limitations. Despite the widespread adoption of digital tools, there is limited research on how these technologies influence protest organization, mobilization, and overall success.

In the EndBadGovernance protests, technology played a crucial role in coordinating activities and spreading messages. However, challenges such as internet shutdowns, misinformation, and digital surveillance affected the effectiveness of these tools. Understanding how technology impacted the organization of the protests and the ways in which it was leveraged by youths is essential for evaluating the role of digital tools in contemporary activism (Channelstv, 2024; Premium Times, 2024).

This study seeks to address the following questions: How did youths use technology and communication tools to organize the EndBadGovernance protests? What were the advantages and challenges associated with these tools? And how did technology impact the overall effectiveness of the protests?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze how youths utilized technology and communication tools to organize the EndBadGovernance protests.
  2. To identify the advantages and challenges associated with using digital tools in protest organization.
  3. To assess the impact of technology on the effectiveness and reach of the EndBadGovernance protests.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How did youths use technology and communication tools to organize the EndBadGovernance protests?
  2. What were the advantages and challenges associated with using digital tools in the organization of these protests?
  3. How did technology impact the overall effectiveness and reach of the EndBadGovernance protests?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the role of technology and communication tools in modern protest movements, using the EndBadGovernance protests as a case study. By exploring how youths utilized digital tools, the study offers insights into the evolving nature of activism and the ways in which technology can enhance or hinder protest efforts.

The findings can inform activists, organizers, and policymakers about best practices for leveraging technology in protest movements. Understanding the advantages and challenges of digital tools can help optimize their use in future protests, improve organizational strategies, and address potential issues related to misinformation and digital surveillance. Additionally, the study contributes to the broader field of digital activism, highlighting the impact of technology on social movements and public engagement.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses on the use of technology and communication tools by youths in organizing the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. It examines the role of social media platforms, messaging apps, and other digital tools in the organization and mobilization of the protests. The study period covers the protests in 2024, providing a contemporary perspective on the use of technology in activism. While the findings may offer insights for other contexts, the scope is limited to the EndBadGovernance protests and may not be directly applicable to other protest movements or regions.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
