GENDER DYNAMICS IN PROTEST MOVEMENTS - THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN NIGERIAN PROTESTS (A CASE STUDY OF ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST IN NIGERIA)

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Protests have long been a means for marginalized and oppressed groups to voice their grievances and demand change. In Nigeria, women have played a pivotal role in many social and political movements, despite facing significant cultural and structural barriers. The EndBadGovernance protests of 2024 are a recent example of this dynamic, where women emerged as crucial participants and leaders in the movement.

Historically, Nigerian women have been at the forefront of several significant protests. The Aba Women’s Riot of 1929 is a notable example, where women protested against colonial policies and economic injustices. This historical precedent set the stage for continued female involvement in political activism. In contemporary Nigeria, the EndBadGovernance protests highlight the evolving role of women in protest movements. These protests, driven by widespread dissatisfaction with governance and economic conditions, saw women not only participating in large numbers but also leading and organizing the movement (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024).

The involvement of women in the EndBadGovernance protests is significant for several reasons. It challenges traditional gender roles and showcases women's agency in political activism. Furthermore, it highlights the unique perspectives and contributions that women bring to protest movements, including organizational skills, resilience, and a focus on community welfare. This study aims to explore the gender dynamics within the EndBadGovernance protests, examining the role of women and the impact of their participation on the movement’s outcomes and public perception (Premium Times, 2024; Punchng, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The role of women in protest movements, particularly in the context of Nigerian protests, has not been sufficiently explored. The central problem of this study is to investigate the gender dynamics within the EndBadGovernance protests, focusing on the participation and influence of women. This includes examining the challenges they faced, their contributions, and the overall impact of their involvement on the protest movement (Channelstv, 2024; Aljazeera, 2024).

Despite their significant involvement, women's roles in protests are often underrepresented or overlooked in academic and media narratives. This research aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of the gender dynamics within the EndBadGovernance protests, thereby contributing to a more inclusive understanding of protest movements in Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the participation and roles of women in the EndBadGovernance protests.
  2. To examine the challenges faced by women in protest movements.
  3. To assess the impact of women's involvement on the outcomes and public perception of the EndBadGovernance protests.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What roles did women play in the EndBadGovernance protests?
  2. What challenges did women face in their participation in the protests?
  3. How did the involvement of women influence the outcomes and public perception of the EndBadGovernance protests?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it provides a gendered perspective on protest movements, highlighting the crucial role of women in political activism. By focusing on the EndBadGovernance protests, the research underscores the importance of women's contributions and the challenges they face, thus contributing to a more nuanced understanding of protest dynamics.

Secondly, the findings will be valuable for activists, policymakers, and scholars interested in gender and social movements. Understanding the gender dynamics in protests can inform strategies to support and enhance women's participation in future movements, thereby strengthening overall protest effectiveness.

Lastly, this study contributes to the broader discourse on gender and politics in Nigeria. By documenting and analyzing women's roles in the EndBadGovernance protests, the research adds to the body of knowledge on women's political activism and their impact on governance and social change.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focuses on the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, specifically examining the period from 2024. It covers the participation and roles of women in these protests, the challenges they faced, and the impact of their involvement. The scope is limited to the gender dynamics within this specific protest movement and does not cover all protest movements in Nigeria.
