EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INFLATION RATES AND PUBLIC PROTESTS IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST IN NIGERIA)

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Inflation, the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, is a critical economic indicator that significantly impacts the purchasing power of individuals. In Nigeria, inflation has been a persistent issue, with periodic spikes exacerbating economic hardships for the populace. The EndBadGovernance protests, which erupted in Nigeria in July 2024, were driven by widespread discontent with the government’s economic policies, including issues related to inflation and cost of living. Inflation rates in Nigeria have fluctuated significantly over the past decade, often driven by factors such as changes in oil prices, currency devaluation, and economic mismanagement. High inflation rates erode savings, increase the cost of living, and contribute to general economic instability. The EndBadGovernance protests provide a lens through which to explore how such economic conditions translate into public unrest. The EndBadGovernance protests emerged as a direct response to economic grievances, including rising inflation and the perceived failure of government policies to address these issues. Understanding the relationship between inflation and public protests helps in analyzing how economic factors influence social stability and public sentiment.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria were partly fueled by economic frustrations, particularly high inflation rates. However, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis on how inflation specifically influences public protests and unrest in Nigeria. This study aims to address this gap by examining the correlation between inflation rates and the occurrence and intensity of protests. While it is acknowledged that economic conditions can influence social unrest, the specific impact of inflation on public protests in Nigeria, especially in the context of the EndBadGovernance protests, remains underexplored. Analyzing this relationship is crucial for understanding the triggers of public dissent and the effectiveness of governmental responses to economic crises.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the correlation between inflation rates and the timing and intensity of the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria.
  2. To assess how changes in inflation rates have influenced public sentiment and participation in the EndBadGovernance protests.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of governmental responses to inflation-related grievances raised during the EndBadGovernance protests.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the correlation between inflation rates and the timing and intensity of the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria?
  2. How have fluctuations in inflation rates influenced public sentiment and participation in the EndBadGovernance protests?
  3. How effective were governmental responses to the economic grievances highlighted by the EndBadGovernance protests?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of how inflation affects public protests, contributing to the broader understanding of the relationship between economic indicators and social unrest. Insights from this study can inform policymakers and economic analysts about the potential social consequences of inflationary pressures and help design more effective responses to prevent and manage public unrest. Understanding the impact of inflation on protests can help in crafting policies that mitigate economic pressures and address public grievances more proactively. It also aids in anticipating and managing potential sources of social unrest related to economic conditions.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study includes an analysis of the relationship between inflation rates and the EndBadGovernance protests, focusing on the period from July 2024, when the protests began, to their ongoing developments. The study will be delimited to examining the specific context of inflation and its effects on public sentiment and protests within Nigeria.

Delimitations:

Focus on Inflation: The study will concentrate specifically on inflation rates and their direct impact on the protests, without delving into other economic factors such as unemployment or currency devaluation.

Timeframe: The analysis will cover the period surrounding the EndBadGovernance protests, providing a snapshot rather than a longitudinal view.

Geographic Scope: While the study will focus on Nigeria as a whole, specific case studies may be used to illustrate points.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Inflation Rate: The percentage increase in the average price level of a basket of goods and services over a specified period.

Public Protests: Collective demonstrations or actions by citizens expressing dissent or demand for changes in government policies or actions.

EndBadGovernance Protests: Nationwide demonstrations in Nigeria beginning in July 2024, driven by economic grievances, including high inflation and poor governance.

Economic Grievances: Complaints or issues raised by the public related to economic conditions, such as rising prices, unemployment, and inadequate government policies.
