EVALUATING GOVERNMENT PALLIATIVE MEASURES AS RESPONSES TO PROTESTER DEMANDS (A CASE STUDY OF ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST IN NIGERIA)

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The EndBadGovernance protests, which began in July 2024, marked a significant moment in Nigeria's recent history, driven by widespread dissatisfaction with economic conditions and governance. The protests, characterized by demonstrations and public outcry over rising fuel prices, inflation, and economic mismanagement, prompted the Nigerian government to implement various palliative measures aimed at addressing the protesters' demands and mitigating the social unrest. Governments often introduce palliative measures in response to protests to address public grievances and restore stability. These measures can include economic aid, policy adjustments, and social programs designed to alleviate the immediate effects of grievances. In the case of the EndBadGovernance protests, the Nigerian government announced several palliative measures in an attempt to address the concerns raised by the protesters and reduce the intensity of the demonstrations.

Evaluating the effectiveness of these palliative measures is crucial for understanding their impact on public perception, the resolution of the issues that led to the protests, and the overall effectiveness of government responses in managing social unrest. This study focuses on assessing the government’s palliative measures in response to the EndBadGovernance protests. It aims to evaluate the appropriateness, effectiveness, and impact of these measures on both the protesters and the broader population.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While the Nigerian government implemented several palliative measures in response to the EndBadGovernance protests, there is a need to assess their effectiveness and impact. The problem addressed by this study is the lack of comprehensive evaluation regarding how these measures met the demands of the protesters and how they affected public sentiment and social stability.

This study seeks to provide insights into the effectiveness of government responses, offering a clear understanding of how well these measures addressed the issues raised by the protests and their impact on the overall social and economic environment.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the appropriateness of the government’s palliative measures in addressing the demands of the EndBadGovernance protesters.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of these measures in alleviating the economic and social issues that led to the protests.
  3. To analyze the impact of the palliative measures on public perception and social stability.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How appropriate were the government’s palliative measures in addressing the specific demands of the EndBadGovernance protesters?
  2. To what extent were these measures effective in mitigating the economic and social issues that sparked the protests?
  3. What impact did the palliative measures have on public perception and social stability in Nigeria?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a detailed evaluation of the government’s palliative measures in response to the EndBadGovernance protests. By assessing the appropriateness, effectiveness, and impact of these measures, the study offers valuable insights into how governments can effectively address public grievances and manage social unrest. The findings will be useful for policymakers, social scientists, and activists in understanding the strengths and limitations of palliative measures and in developing more effective strategies for responding to similar situations in the future.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study includes an evaluation of the government’s palliative measures implemented in response to the EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. It covers the appropriateness, effectiveness, and impact of these measures on the protesters and the broader population. The study is delimited by its focus on the EndBadGovernance protests and does not include an analysis of palliative measures related to other protest movements or social issues. It relies on secondary data sources such as government reports, media coverage, and public opinion surveys, and does not involve primary data collection or interviews with government officials or protesters.

1.7 Operational Definition of Terms

Palliative Measures: Actions taken by the government to address immediate grievances and mitigate the effects of social or economic issues that have led to protests.
