Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Leadership styles play a crucial role in shaping the political and socio-economic landscape of any nation. In Nigeria, the leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who assumed office in 2023, has been a subject of intense scrutiny and debate. Known for his influence in Nigerian politics, Tinubu's presidency has been marked by a leadership style that some critics describe as lavish and disconnected from the realities of the average Nigerian citizen. This perception has fueled widespread discontent, particularly in the context of the Endbadgovernance protest that erupted in 2024, driven by frustrations over economic hardship, governance failures, and the perceived insensitivity of the ruling class. President Tinubu's administration has been characterized by a leadership style that many observers consider extravagant. This perception is grounded in the significant gap between the lifestyle of the political elite and the everyday struggles of ordinary Nigerians. Despite the country's economic challenges, there have been reports of opulent spending by government officials, lavish state events, and a general sense of disconnect between the leadership and the populace. This opulence is often contrasted with the harsh realities faced by many Nigerians, including high inflation, unemployment, and poverty.

Tinubu's leadership approach, which includes a strong emphasis on consolidating power and maintaining political control, has also been criticized for its lack of focus on addressing the urgent needs of the populace. The administration's policies have been perceived as favoring the elite, with little impact on improving the living conditions of the majority. This has led to a growing sense of alienation among citizens, who feel that their leaders are out of touch with their daily struggles.

The Endbadgovernance protest emerged as a direct response to these frustrations. The movement, which began in July 2024, was fueled by widespread discontent with the state of governance in Nigeria. Protesters decried the high cost of living, rampant corruption, and the government's failure to provide basic services and economic relief. The protest quickly gained momentum, drawing support from diverse segments of society, including the youth, civil society organizations, and ordinary citizens who were fed up with the status quo. The Endbadgovernance protest was not just a reaction to economic hardship but also a response to what was perceived as the extravagant lifestyle of the political elite. Protesters argued that while they were struggling to make ends meet, their leaders were indulging in luxury and wasteful spending. This contrast between the leadership's lifestyle and the people's struggles became a central theme of the protests, fueling anger and resentment.

In response to the growing unrest, the Tinubu administration employed various tactics to undermine and discredit the protest movement. One of the key strategies was the use of propaganda, aimed at portraying the protesters as misguided, violent, or manipulated by political opponents. State-controlled media outlets and government spokespeople often downplayed the legitimacy of the protesters' grievances, instead framing the movement as a threat to national stability. This propaganda campaign included attempts to divide the protest movement by painting it as a tool of foreign interests or opposition parties. The government also sought to control the narrative by emphasizing the potential dangers of mass protests, such as violence, looting, and social unrest. This approach was aimed at discouraging participation in the protests and creating a climate of fear and uncertainty.

The state also employed more direct forms of repression, including the use of security forces to disperse protesters, the imposition of curfews, and the disruption of communication networks. These actions were widely criticized both domestically and internationally, as they were seen as attempts to stifle legitimate dissent and suppress the voices of ordinary Nigerians. The lavish leadership style of President Tinubu and the government's use of propaganda in response to the Endbadgovernance protest have had significant implications for governance in Nigeria. The administration's approach has deepened the divide between the government and the governed, eroding public trust in political institutions. The perception of an out-of-touch leadership has fueled cynicism and disillusionment among the populace, particularly the youth, who feel increasingly disconnected from the political process.

The government's handling of the protest has also raised questions about the state of democracy in Nigeria. The use of propaganda and repression to silence dissent has been seen as a sign of authoritarian tendencies, undermining the democratic principles of free expression and peaceful assembly. This has further damaged Nigeria's image on the global stage, where the country has often been criticized for its human rights record. The dynamics of leadership, protest, and state response in Nigeria cannot be fully understood without considering the historical context. Nigeria has a long history of authoritarian rule, military coups, and civilian administrations that have often struggled with issues of corruption, governance, and economic mismanagement. The lavish lifestyles of political elites have been a recurring theme in Nigerian politics, contributing to public discontent and social unrest.

Past administrations have also employed propaganda and state repression to manage dissent, from the military regimes of the 1970s and 1980s to more recent civilian governments. However, the Endbadgovernance protest is unique in its scale, intensity, and the context in which it occurred. It reflects the frustrations of a population that has grown weary of the cycle of poor governance and the unfulfilled promises of successive administrations.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The leadership style of President Tinubu, characterized by perceived lavishness and detachment from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, has exacerbated existing socio-economic tensions and contributed to the outbreak of the Endbadgovernance protest. The administration's reliance on propaganda to discredit the protest movement has further complicated the situation, undermining the legitimacy of the protesters' grievances and deepening the divide between the government and the populace. The problem at the core of this study is the disconnect between Nigeria's leadership and its citizens, as evidenced by the lavish lifestyle of the political elite and the use of state machinery to suppress dissent. This disconnect raises critical questions about the nature of governance in Nigeria, the effectiveness of leadership in addressing public concerns, and the role of propaganda in shaping public perception.

This study seeks to critically assess the impact of President Tinubu's leadership style on the socio-political landscape of Nigeria, with a particular focus on the Endbadgovernance protest. It also aims to explore the implications of the government's propaganda tactics on the protest movement and broader civic engagement in Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To analyze the characteristics of President Tinubu's leadership style and its impact on public perception and governance in Nigeria.

To examine the factors that led to the outbreak of the Endbadgovernance protest and the role of perceived lavishness in fueling public discontent.

To assess the effectiveness and consequences of the government's propaganda campaign in response to the Endbadgovernance protest.

1.4 Research Questions

What are the key characteristics of President Tinubu's leadership style, and how has it influenced public perception and governance in Nigeria?

How did the perceived lavish lifestyle of the political elite contribute to the outbreak and intensity of the Endbadgovernance protest?

What were the main tactics used in the government's propaganda campaign, and what impact did these tactics have on the protest movement and public discourse?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a critical examination of the relationship between leadership styles and public discontent in Nigeria. By focusing on the lavish leadership style of President Tinubu and the government's response to the Endbadgovernance protest, the study offers insights into the challenges of governance in a complex and diverse society. The findings of this study are relevant to policymakers, political analysts, and civil society organizations interested in understanding the dynamics of protest movements and the implications of leadership practices on social stability and democratic governance.

The study also contributes to the broader discourse on the role of propaganda in modern governance, particularly in the context of protests and civil unrest. By exploring the government's use of propaganda to manage dissent, the study highlights the potential risks of such tactics in undermining public trust and the long-term stability of democratic institutions.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to an assessment of President Tinubu's leadership style and the government's response to the Endbadgovernance protest in Nigeria. The study focuses on the period from 2023 to 2024, encompassing the early years of Tinubu's presidency and the events surrounding the protest movement. It does not extend to a comprehensive analysis of Tinubu's entire political career or the broader socio-political context of Nigeria.

The study is delimited by its reliance on secondary sources of data, including news reports, academic literature, and official documents. While these sources provide valuable insights into the issues under investigation, they may also be limited by biases, gaps in information, and the challenges of accessing reliable data on politically sensitive topics.
