Abstract: The impact of literacy programs on adult prisoners’ rehabilitation was explored to assess how education contributes to the reformation and reintegration of incarcerated individuals. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of literacy programs in reducing recidivism, enhancing employability post-release, and fostering positive behavioral changes among prisoners. A survey design was chosen for its ability to gather detailed feedback directly from participants. The sample size included 150 adult prisoners, selected through purposive sampling to focus on those involved in literacy programs. The research was conducted in Abuja, Nigeria, where prison education initiatives are actively being implemented. Findings indicated that prisoners participating in literacy programs exhibited lower rates of recidivism, higher employability due to improved literacy skills, and notable positive behavioral changes. It was recommended that prison authorities expand literacy programs to reach all inmates, integrate vocational training with literacy education, and provide ongoing support post-release to ensure sustained rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
