Background of the Study
The use of serial materials in academic research is integral to the academic success of students, particularly those in higher education institutions. Serial materials, including journals, magazines, newspapers, and other periodicals, are crucial sources of up-to-date information and provide diverse perspectives on various topics (Adeleke, 2021). They are vital for students, especially those studying Library and Information Science, as they foster critical thinking, enhance research skills, and support the development of knowledge in their field (Oladokun, 2022).
In Nigerian universities, the accessibility and utilization of serial materials have been subjects of considerable interest and concern. With the advent of digital libraries and electronic resources, the landscape of information retrieval has dramatically changed. Despite these advancements, several challenges persist, such as inadequate funding for libraries, limited access to electronic resources, and a lack of awareness among students about the availability and use of these materials (Nwezeh, 2023). These challenges are particularly pronounced in institutions like Saadu Zungur University, Gadau, where resources are often stretched thin.
The 400-Level Library and Information Science students at Saadu Zungur University are at a critical juncture in their academic journey, requiring comprehensive and up-to-date resources for their research projects. Evaluating their use of serial materials provides insight into the effectiveness of library services and the extent to which students utilize these resources to enhance their academic performance (Okeke & Ezeani, 2020). This evaluation is crucial in identifying gaps and developing strategies to improve access to and usage of serial materials, thereby enhancing the quality of education provided.
Moreover, understanding the usage patterns of serial materials among undergraduate students can inform library management and policymakers about the necessary interventions to support academic research. As the educational landscape evolves, it is imperative to continuously assess and adapt library services to meet the changing needs of students (Uwakwe, 2021). This study aims to contribute to this ongoing effort by providing empirical data on the use of serial materials among 400-Level Library and Information Science students at Saadu Zungur University, Gadau.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of serial materials in academic research, there is a growing concern about their underutilization among undergraduate students in Nigerian universities. Preliminary observations and existing literature suggest that many students are not fully leveraging these resources due to various challenges, including limited access, lack of awareness, and inadequate library support (Igwe, 2020). This underutilization hampers the academic development of students and undermines the overall educational objectives of the institutions.
At Saadu Zungur University, Gadau, the situation is no different. The 400-Level Library and Information Science students, who are expected to be proficient in information retrieval and utilization, often struggle with effectively incorporating serial materials into their research. This raises questions about the adequacy of library resources, the effectiveness of library orientation programs, and the overall research culture within the university (Ahmed, 2022).
Given the crucial role that serial materials play in academic research, it is imperative to address these challenges and enhance the utilization of these resources. This study aims to evaluate the use of serial materials among 400-Level Library and Information Science students at Saadu Zungur University, identifying the key barriers and proposing actionable solutions to improve access and usage.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it provides empirical data on the utilization of serial materials among undergraduate students, which is essential for library management and academic policymakers in making informed decisions. Secondly, the findings of this study will help identify specific barriers to the effective use of serial materials, thereby guiding interventions to enhance access and utilization (Eke, 2023). Thirdly, the study contributes to the body of knowledge in Library and Information Science, offering insights that can be applied in other Nigerian universities and beyond.
1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The study focuses on 400-Level Library and Information Science students at Saadu Zungur University, Gadau, during the 2023-2024 academic session. It examines their usage patterns of serial materials, the challenges they encounter, and potential strategies for improvement. The study does not cover other departments or levels within the university, nor does it extend to other universities in Nigeria.
