ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on Conservative practices of information resources by libraries for enhanced collection usefulness in University Libraries in Bauchi State using Sa'adu Zungur University Library as a case study. Specifically, the study aimed to identify and evaluate the conservative practices currently employed by university libraries in Bauchi State, assess the effectiveness of these conservative practices in enhancing the usefulness and accessibility of library collections, and identify the challenges faced by university libraries in Bauchi State in implementing effective conservation practices. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection and was analysed using the frequency counts and percentages. A total of 100 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of Students and librarians in Sa'adu Zungur University Library, Gadau. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that the conservative practices employed by Sa'adu Zungur University Library, Gadau in enhancing the usefulness and accessibility of library collections are effective. On the basis of this finding, it was recommended that to address the challenges of inadequate funding and high costs of conservation materials, it is recommended that the university seeks additional funding sources, such as grants, partnerships with private organizations, and government support. Allocating a dedicated budget for library conservation efforts will ensure the continuous improvement and maintenance of the library’s resources.
