ABSTRACT
THE INFLUENCE OF GEOPOLITICAL EVENTS ON INVESTMENT DECISIONS
This study examines the influence of geopolitical events on investment decisions, focusing on: (1) the impact of geopolitical risks on investment performance; (2) the strategies for managing geopolitical risks; (3) the challenges in predicting geopolitical events. A survey research design is employed to collect quantitative data. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 300 respondents from Lagos is selected, representing a mix of investors exposed to international markets. An international investment firm is chosen as the case study due to its experience in managing geopolitical risks. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.87. Findings indicate that geopolitical events, such as political instability and trade wars, significantly impact investment decisions and portfolio performance. Techniques such as risk assessment, diversification, and scenario planning are highlighted. It is recommended that investors stay informed about global political developments, diversify their portfolios geographically, and implement risk management strategies to mitigate the impact of geopolitical risks.
