ABSTRACT
THE IMPACT OF ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS ON PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION
This research explores the impact of alternative investments on portfolio diversification, focusing on: (1) the benefits of including alternative assets in investment portfolios; (2) the strategies for effective alternative investment; (3) the challenges in managing alternative investments. A survey design is used to gather quantitative data. Taro Yamane's formula is applied to derive a sample size of 310 respondents from Lagos, representing various investors with exposure to alternative assets. A private equity firm is chosen as the case study due to its extensive portfolio of alternative investments. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.87. Findings indicate that alternative investments, such as private equity, hedge funds, and commodities, significantly enhance portfolio diversification and offer potential for high returns. However, challenges include higher risks and illiquidity. It is recommended that investors include alternative assets in their portfolios, conduct thorough due diligence, and employ risk management strategies to optimize diversification and returns.
