ABSTRACT
THE ROLE OF ETHICAL INVESTING IN MODERN PORTFOLIOS
This study investigates the role of ethical investing in modern portfolios, focusing on: (1) the impact of ethical investing on portfolio performance; (2) the strategies for incorporating ethical principles into investment decisions; (3) the challenges in ethical investing. A survey design is employed to gather quantitative data. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 300 respondents from Lagos is selected, representing a mix of retail and institutional investors. An ethical investment fund is chosen as the case study due to its commitment to socially responsible investing. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.88. Findings indicate that ethical investing can achieve competitive returns while aligning with investors' values. Strategies such as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, negative screening, and impact investing are highlighted. It is recommended that investors integrate ethical considerations into their investment decisions, utilize ESG metrics, and seek professional advice to balance financial returns with ethical objectives.
