ABSTRACT
THE INFLUENCE OF MARKET TRENDS ON INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE
This study examines the influence of market trends on investment performance with the objectives: (1) to evaluate the impact of market trends on portfolio returns; (2) to identify strategies for leveraging market trends; (3) to understand the challenges in predicting market trends. A survey research design is employed to collect quantitative data. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 320 respondents from Lagos is selected, representing a mix of individual and institutional investors. A stock brokerage firm is chosen as the case study due to its expertise in market analysis. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.86. Findings show that market trends, such as bull and bear markets, significantly impact investment performance. Techniques such as technical analysis, trend following, and momentum investing are highlighted. It is recommended that investors stay informed about market trends, use analytical tools to identify trends, and adapt their investment strategies to capitalize on prevailing market conditions.
