ABSTRACT
THE ROLE OF DIVERSIFICATION IN INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS
This research investigates the role of diversification in investment portfolios by focusing on: (1) the benefits of diversification for risk management; (2) the strategies for achieving optimal diversification; (3) the challenges in maintaining a diversified portfolio. A survey design is used to gather quantitative data. Taro Yamane's formula is applied to derive a sample size of 300 respondents from Port Harcourt, representing various investment sectors. A financial services firm is selected as the case study due to its emphasis on diversified portfolio management. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.88. Findings indicate that diversification significantly reduces portfolio risk and enhances returns by spreading investments across different asset classes. However, challenges include the complexity of achieving optimal diversification and the need for continuous portfolio rebalancing. It is recommended that investors adopt a diversified investment approach, regularly review their portfolios, and seek professional advice to maintain optimal diversification.
