Abstract: THE ROLE OF INTRINSIC MOTIVATION IN EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE

Objective: This study aims to (1) explore the connection between intrinsic motivation and employee performance, (2) identify key factors contributing to intrinsic motivation, and (3) assess the impact of intrinsic motivation on long-term employee performance.

Research Design: A survey design was employed to capture diverse perceptions and experiences related to intrinsic motivation and its effects on performance.

Sample Size: Based on Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 350 employees was selected, ensuring robust statistical analysis with a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error.

Case Study: The research focused on the IT sector, where creativity and self-motivation are critical for success.

Location: Abuja, known for its growing technology industry and skilled workforce.

Reliability Coefficient Score: The survey instrument had a Cronbach's alpha score of 0.85, demonstrating high reliability.

Findings: Intrinsic motivation, driven by factors such as job satisfaction, personal growth, and meaningful work, was found to significantly enhance employee performance. Employees motivated by internal factors consistently outperformed those driven by external rewards.

Recommendation: Companies should foster a work environment that enhances intrinsic motivation by providing opportunities for personal growth, recognizing achievements, and ensuring work aligns with employees' values and interests.
