Background of the Study
The rapid advancement of digital technology and the widespread accessibility of the internet have brought about significant changes in the way news is produced, distributed, and consumed. One of the most profound developments in the media landscape has been the emergence of citizen journalism. Citizen journalism refers to the act of non-professional individuals engaging in the processes of collecting, reporting, analyzing, and disseminating news and information. This phenomenon has gained substantial traction, particularly with the proliferation of smartphones and social media platforms, which have democratized the flow of information and empowered ordinary citizens to participate in the journalistic process (Allan, 2017).
Historically, journalism has been the domain of trained professionals working within established news organizations. These journalists adhere to strict ethical standards and professional practices, including fact-checking, source verification, and editorial oversight. However, the rise of citizen journalism has disrupted this traditional model, blurring the lines between professional journalism and amateur reporting. Citizen journalists can capture and share newsworthy events in real time, often providing immediate and unfiltered accounts of incidents as they unfold (Hermida, 2016). The impact of citizen journalism is particularly evident in regions where access to traditional media is limited or where state-controlled media may restrict the flow of information. In such contexts, citizen journalists have emerged as crucial alternative sources of news, offering diverse perspectives and highlighting issues that may be underreported by mainstream media. For example, during political uprisings, natural disasters, or other crises, citizen journalists have provided invaluable on-the-ground coverage, often at great personal risk (Carlson, 2018).
In Nigeria, the influence of citizen journalism has been increasingly notable, especially in states like Cross River where mainstream media outlets may not have extensive reach. Citizen journalists in Cross River State have played a vital role in bringing local issues to the forefront, engaging the community, and holding authorities accountable. Their contributions have helped to enhance the diversity of news sources and foster greater public participation in the journalistic process. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Additionally, the rapidly evolving nature of digital media means that the findings may become outdated as new technologies and platforms emerge.
