EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY

Academic libraries are primarily committed to providing such library resources and services as would facilitate the achievement of the goals of their parent institutions. In other words, they acquire, organize, store and disseminate books and non-book materials considered necessary for learning, teaching and research activities of the students and staff of their institutions. As in the case of special library, the prime obligation of an academic library is to the members of the institution of which it forms a part. The collection is tailored towards achievement of institutional goals of teaching, learning and research. They serve the students, lectures, administrative members of the academic communities as well as potential users. The Colleges of education libraries is unique among the academic libraries because of its emphasis on teaching and learning more than research as in the case of University libraries. In general, the academic libraries have the same functions and objectives as we examine them very closely. The reason is that some academic libraries may go beyond the curriculum to acquire books or information needs depending on the available funds of that institution.
