EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY
The concept of mass communication as practised in traditional journalism is one in which thousands of newspaper copies roll off the press daily or weekly onto the newsstands and where the newsroom is a large area fitted with desks, type writers, computers, and dozens of reporters with copy
moving from one desk to another (Uche, 2016). Here the journalist is a trained professional, setting the news agenda with the editor acting as gatekeeper. This norm is now under siege from unexpected members of the society - the citizens due to accessibility to new media tools such as the Internet (Bamidele, 2019).
Ademuyiwa (2022) defined information and communication technology as tools used for collection, processing, storage, transmission and dissemination of information while Ogunsola and Aboyade (2015) defined information and technology literacy as “the skills and abilities that will enable the use of computers and related information technology to meet personal, educational and labour market goals. With advances in ICT, electronic information resources such as electronic books, electronic journals, CD-ROM databases, OPAC, online databases and the Internet have launched the world into an information age. Regarding the way that journalists do their (news gathering) work, the Internet has made things easier because journalists can now file in their reports easily from any part of Nigeria where there is Internet access. All they need to do is go to any nearby Internet café and at the touch of a button, the news report is at the editor's desk, ready to be served fresh to the reader (Uche, 2016).
