ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine representative democracy and public accountability in Nigeria: A case study of kudan local government -2015-2023. Specifically, the study aims to examine the concept of representative democracy in Nigeria, examine the mechanisms for public accountability in Nigeria and identify the barriers to public accountability in Nigeria.. The study employed the historical research design. The findings revealed that while democratic principles are theoretically present in the local government structure, there remain significant challenges in their practical implementation. These challenges include a lack of transparency, limited citizen participation, and instances of corruption, which have impeded effective governance and accountability. Despite these issues, the research also identifies areas of progress and potential improvements, such as increasing awareness and engagement among citizens and implementing stricter monitoring mechanisms to hold officials accountable. Strengthening democratic institutions and processes in Kudan Local Government is essential for enhancing public trust and ensuring more effective governance. To further these goals, it is recommended that the government prioritize reforms that promote transparency, enhance civic education, and create more opportunities for citizen engagement in decision-making. Additionally, fostering a culture of accountability within the local government could lead to more effective and responsive governance. By addressing these challenges, Kudan Local Government can move towards a more robust and participatory democratic system that better serves the needs of its constituents. The study thereby recommend that local government should prioritize openness in its operations by providing residents with easy access to relevant information such as budgets, expenditures, and policy decisions. Establishing user-friendly digital platforms and public records systems can facilitate this process. Also, initiatives such as town hall meetings, public consultations, and participatory budgeting can foster direct communication between residents and their representatives. Such practices can help bridge the gap between citizens and government officials, ensuring that local policies better reflect the community's needs and preferences.
