ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on anxiety in women presenting for hysterosalpingography (HSG) a single centre study. Specifically, the study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of anxiety symptoms among women undergoing hysterosalpingography (HSG), identify the factors contributing to anxiety in women presenting for HSG, including demographic, clinical, and psychosocial variables, and explore the impact of anxiety on the overall experience of HSG and its potential influence on pain perception, procedure satisfaction, and future reproductive health decisions among women. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection which was raised against a five Likert scale of Strongly Agree(SA), Agree(A), Undecided(U), Disagree(D), and Strongly Disagree(SD), and was analysed using the frequency counts and percentages. A total of 400 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of women that attend Abubbakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi for hysterosalpingography (HSG). Out of the 400 respondents, 394 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that the prevalence of anxiety symptoms varies significantly among women undergoing HSG based on demographic factors such as age, education, and socioeconomic status, certain clinical and psychosocial factors are significantly associated with increased levels of anxiety in women undergoing HSG, and anxiety during HSG is significantly associated with altered pain perception, lower procedure satisfaction, and influences future reproductive health decisions in women. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that patient-centered communication should be enhanced by ensuring healthcare providers are attentive to the concerns of women undergoing HSG. Addressing previous negative experiences with medical procedures and concerns about potential diagnostic outcomes through clear and empathetic communication can contribute to reducing anxiety levels.
