ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on assessing the benefits of a peer mentorship program for individual with schizophrenia focusing on the mentorship relationship impact on the psychosocial rehabilitation. Specifically, the study aimed to examine if peer mentorship programs enhanced socialization and reduced isolation for individuals with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation, examine if peer mentorship programs reduce stigma for individuals with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation, and examine if peer mentorship programs improved adherence to treatment socialization and reduced isolation for individuals with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. Questionnaire was used for data collection and was analysed using the frequency counts and percentages. A total of 100 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of patients and health practitioners in Malam Kawu Youth Rehabilitation and Orphanage Centre (MKYROC) Bauchi. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that Peer mentorship program has a significant benefit for individual with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation ranging from: Peer mentorship programs enhanced socialization and reduced isolation for individuals with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation; Peer mentorship programs reduce stigma for individuals with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation; and that Peer mentorship programs improved adherence to treatment socialization and reduced isolation for individuals with schizophrenia in the realm of psychosocial rehabilitation. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that Given the positive impacts observed, expanding peer mentorship programs to a broader audience within the psychosocial rehabilitation community is recommended. Scaling up these programs can include increasing the number of trained peer mentors, extending the program's reach to more institutions (like hospitals, community centers, and outpatient facilities), and ensuring adequate funding and resources. This expansion should also consider diverse geographic and demographic settings to address varying needs and cultural sensitivities.
