Background of the Study
Book fairs are cultural and academic events designed to expose students to a wide range of reading materials and authors, thereby stimulating interest in reading and literacy development. When organized by school libraries, book fairs can serve as effective platforms for promoting reading culture by making books more accessible and encouraging social interaction around reading (James & Kwaji, 2023). In many Nigerian secondary schools, especially in regions like Numan, reading culture is waning due to limited exposure to diverse literature, digital distractions, and a lack of reading-oriented programs. Library-based book fairs have emerged as a response to these challenges, often involving book exhibitions, author visits, interactive storytelling, and book giveaways. These activities create excitement around books and cultivate a lifelong habit of reading among students. Studies have highlighted that students who participate in book fairs tend to exhibit increased library patronage and more positive attitudes toward reading (Nwosu & Bala, 2024). However, the impact of such interventions remains largely anecdotal in rural and semi-urban settings. It is necessary to empirically assess how library-led book fairs influence students’ reading behaviors in Numan. Such an appraisal will provide a framework for scaling and sustaining library programs that promote literacy across similar communities.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of book fairs in some schools in Numan, many students still display poor reading habits and limited library use. While anecdotal evidence suggests book fairs may be beneficial, there is limited empirical research examining their actual impact on reading culture. Without this evidence, schools may either underutilize or poorly structure these events. This study seeks to appraise the real impact of library-based book fairs on students' reading culture in Numan.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the frequency and structure of book fairs organized by school libraries in Numan.
To assess the influence of these book fairs on students’ reading habits.
To identify the challenges and successes of conducting book fairs in school libraries.
Research Questions
How frequently are book fairs held by school libraries in Numan?
What is the impact of these book fairs on students’ reading culture?
What challenges are faced in organizing book fairs in school libraries?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant in highlighting effective strategies for improving reading culture among students through school-based programs. The findings will assist educators, librarians, and policymakers in designing better literacy initiatives and justify investment in book-related extracurricular activities in schools.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to appraising the impact of library-based book fairs on students’ reading culture in Numan Local Government Area, Adamawa State.
