Background of the Study:
Academic stress is a pervasive issue that affects students’ well-being and academic performance. School libraries, as centers for learning and relaxation, can play a key role in reducing academic stress by providing a calm and resource-rich environment. In Gudu Local Government Area, Sokoto State, libraries offer spaces designed for quiet study, stress-relief activities, and recreational reading that help alleviate the pressures of academic life (Ogunleye, 2023). Counseling sessions, mindfulness workshops, and relaxation areas within the library further contribute to a reduction in stress levels. However, factors such as overcrowded facilities, inadequate maintenance of quiet zones, and limited awareness of stress management resources may diminish the intended benefits. This study examines the role of school libraries in reducing academic stress, investigating their impact on student well-being and academic performance, and identifying strategies to enhance the supportive environment provided by libraries (Aminu, 2024; Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the potential of school libraries to ease academic stress, many students in Gudu experience high levels of stress due to overcrowded facilities, limited calming spaces, and insufficient stress management programs, ultimately affecting their academic outcomes (Usman, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of library services in reducing academic stress.
To identify challenges in creating stress-relief environments in libraries.
To recommend strategies for enhancing stress management programs.
Research Questions:
How do school libraries contribute to reducing academic stress?
What challenges affect the creation of a calming study environment?
What measures can improve stress-relief initiatives?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant because it underscores the potential of school libraries to provide a supportive environment that reduces academic stress. Improved library services can lead to better mental health and enhanced academic performance among students in Gudu. (Chinwe, 2023)
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to secondary schools in Gudu Local Government Area, Sokoto State, focusing solely on library-based initiatives aimed at reducing academic stress.
Definitions of Terms:
Academic Stress: The psychological pressure associated with educational demands.
Stress Management Programs: Initiatives aimed at reducing stress through counseling and relaxation techniques.
