Background of the Study
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are digital platforms designed to facilitate teaching and learning through the use of technology. These systems include tools for online lectures, assignments, discussion forums, and access to digital resources. In library education, VLEs play a significant role by providing flexible and interactive platforms for training librarians, enhancing continuous professional development, and promoting digital literacy (Adebayo & Musa, 2022). The integration of VLEs into library education is not only a response to the demands of the 21st-century digital society but also a critical strategy for addressing accessibility, scalability, and inclusiveness in librarian training. In Ilorin South, Kwara State, where educational institutions are expanding their digital capabilities, VLEs offer the potential to enrich library instruction and bridge gaps in knowledge acquisition among both students and practitioners. Despite these opportunities, the level of adoption, user engagement, and overall effectiveness of VLEs in delivering quality library education remain largely under-examined. Furthermore, challenges such as infrastructural limitations, low digital skills, and inadequate content development may hinder the full potential of these platforms. Understanding how VLEs are used, their benefits, and the barriers to their effective implementation is essential to enhancing the quality of library education in the region (Ojo & Hassan, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
While Virtual Learning Environments have become widespread in various educational sectors, their role in library education—especially within Ilorin South—has not been sufficiently explored. Many institutions still rely heavily on traditional methods of instruction despite the availability of digital platforms. The absence of structured and effective VLE integration may result in gaps in learning, poor engagement, and underutilization of online resources. There is also limited empirical evidence on how these platforms affect teaching outcomes and student satisfaction in library education programs (Ibrahim & Salami, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To examine the extent of VLE usage in library education programs in Ilorin South.
To assess the effectiveness of VLEs in enhancing learning outcomes in library instruction.
To identify the challenges associated with implementing VLEs in library education.
