Background of the Study
Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital content on the physical world, providing interactive and immersive learning experiences. In user education, AR has emerged as a dynamic tool for introducing library services, teaching information literacy, and guiding users through resource navigation. Special libraries in Akoko North-East are beginning to explore AR for orientation sessions, virtual shelf guides, and interactive tutorials (Oladipo & Fagbamila, 2024). This technological intervention holds the potential to improve engagement, comprehension, and retention, especially among digital natives and STEM learners. As a complement to traditional instruction, AR supports personalized, self-paced learning and accommodates diverse learning preferences. Despite its promise, limitations such as cost of development, technical maintenance, and limited content creation expertise pose challenges to widespread adoption (Ajayi & Adefolalu, 2023). This study evaluates how AR is being used in special libraries in Akoko North-East to enhance user education and what outcomes have been observed.
Statement of the Problem
Although AR has the potential to revolutionize user education, its implementation in special libraries in Akoko North-East is minimal. A lack of funding, technical skills, and awareness inhibits its integration into educational services.
Objectives of the Study
To examine current AR applications in user education in special libraries.
To evaluate the effectiveness of AR in enhancing user engagement and learning.
To identify barriers to the adoption of AR technologies in library settings.
Research Questions
What AR tools are used in special library user education in Akoko North-East?
How do users perceive the effectiveness of AR in learning library skills?
What challenges are associated with AR integration in user education?
Significance of the Study
The study will inform library stakeholders about the benefits and feasibility of using AR in instructional programs, potentially transforming how libraries teach and engage users.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses exclusively on the use of augmented reality in special library user education within Akoko North-East.
