Background of the study
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing library services by automating routine tasks, enhancing user engagement, and streamlining information management. At the Federal University of Technology, Akure, AI has been integrated into various library operations, including automated checkouts, virtual reference services, and personalized information delivery. This transformation has resulted in more efficient catalog management and improved user experiences, with AI-driven analytics enabling libraries to better understand patron needs (Oluwatobi, 2023). The adoption of intelligent systems has allowed the library staff to focus on complex research support and instructional roles while routine processes are handled by AI-powered tools. Moreover, the integration of machine learning algorithms in predictive analytics has enhanced decision-making regarding resource acquisitions and collection development. However, the rapid deployment of AI poses challenges such as ethical concerns, data privacy issues, and the need for continual staff training to keep up with emerging technologies (Adekunle, 2024). The study investigates how these AI applications impact service delivery, user satisfaction, and operational efficiency in the university library. It further explores the potential barriers to effective AI integration and the strategies that can mitigate these challenges, ensuring that the benefits of AI are maximized for enhanced academic support and resource accessibility (Ibrahim, 2023). Overall, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of AI’s transformative effect on library services at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
Statement of the problem
Despite the promising benefits of AI in automating and enhancing library services, there are significant challenges impacting its effective implementation at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Key issues include inadequate staff training, concerns regarding data privacy, and resistance to change from traditional library systems. These factors have led to inconsistent service quality and reduced user engagement. Moreover, the rapid pace of AI technology evolution creates an ongoing challenge to maintain and upgrade systems, causing gaps in service continuity and reliability (Olu, 2024). The study aims to critically assess these challenges and explore potential strategies to overcome them, ensuring that AI-driven innovations fully enhance library operations and user satisfaction.
